When working with older adults, it is important to learn familiar songs from their young adult and middle adult years. Some songs you should know and try to memorize include the following:

  • “My Wild Irish Rose”
  • “Let Me Call You Sweetheart”
  • “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”
  • “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles”
  • “You Are My Sunshine”
  • “Till We Meet Again”
  • “Smiles”
  • “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”
  • “Daisy, Daisy” (aka Bicycle built for two)
  • “When You Wore a Tulip”
  • “The Band Played On”
  • “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree”

There are so many great songs to learn! A great resource for these old standards is a song edited by Lisa Shawley, “Come On, Let’s Sing”. It is available in the Conservatory MT Resource Room, but you might consider buying your own copy through West Music or at a conference.
