Population/Diagnosis: adults with developmental disabilities

Domain focus: motor

Primary Goal or Outcome: to improve basic gross and fine motor function levels (stamina)

Materials/Equipment Needed: iPod, iPod dock, various handheld percussion instruments that can be shaken (egg shakers, tambourines, etc.)

Approximate time needed: five-ten minutes

  • Pre-requisite: iPod set to Metro Station’s “Shake It” (refrain only… 2:37 mark is where it starts)
  • Pass out various percussion instruments client
  • Through first refrain of “Shake It”,  instruct clients to shake various hand held percussion instruments
  • Repeat as many times as MTS feels necessary; give praise and reinforce participation throughout
  • Instruct clients to put down instruments and explain that second time through song, dancing will be the main type of movement
  • Ask clients which parts of body to move; use these throughout refrain (call out when you want to switch; ex: “OK, now shake your feet!”)
  • Play “Shake It” as many times as MTSs feels necessary; give praise and reinforce participation throughout
